P3/4/5 Explore the Jurassic Period

Primary 3/4/5 have been learning about dinosaurs for their topic this term. Miss Hunter has been looking at the historical side of this topic by exploring the evidence of dinosaur existence while Mrs Christie has taken charge of Dinosaur characteristics and diet. There have been lots of opportunities for the children to become Palaeontologists in the classroom as well as thinking about the timeline for dinosaur’s existence. They have produced some fantastic pieces of writing this term including posters, dinosaur poetry, reports on invasion in the woods and creating their own characters. We have been working hard to improve our vocabulary and trying to excite our reader when they read our work.

See some examples of our work below:

The children made fossils using some dinosaur bones in the clay.
There was an excavation site in the class on two occasions – the children reported this was a time-consuming process which you needed lots of patience for.
Following some excavation, the children looked at where most of the dinosaurs would’ve existed. I am led to believe that most would’ve been in America/Canada with some in China and a Pterodactyl being from Germany.
An example of a Newspaper report telling us about the invasion in the woods.
An example of a dinosaur description written after making one using an online programme.
A poem example written after reading Mrs Christie’s book ‘You must never touch a dinosaur…’

Set Sail with the Nursery

The Nursery staff were very busy on the In-set day last week making some changes in the outdoor area following observations made of the children in the play environment.

The small hut at the back of the garden was not being used by the children It got Mrs MacDonald thinking and following some discussion with the children and staff she created a lovely boat ticket office! Look at the photographs below to see the transformation. We have no doubt it will grow and develop over time as the children let us know what else the children would like to be added/taken away.

Before
After

The children were delighted to return to Nursery and explore this new area. They even had a special creature from the sea visit the nursery as well as several donations of creels, fishing rods, life jackets and buoys to make ‘Holly’ and the ‘Ticket Office’ feel even more real! A huge thank you to everyone who kindly donated these items for the children to explore and play with.

The children have been so interested in learning more about the ‘Sea’ that this is going to be the focus of their learning over the next fortnight. It’s amazing what adding some blue food colouring to the water can do too – it looks so inviting and the children soon got stuck in with pouring, measuring and bringing the sea creatures to life. ‘Baby Shark’ was echoing through the building at one point too!

Back outdoors, the potting shed was also not being used for purpose which sparked a HUGE clear out mission. Emma and Mrs Campbell got to work sorting, tidying and making the space an inviting one for the children to play in. They have loved using over the past week to support their growing, planting and interest in taking care of the garden.

Seesaw

Good Morning all,

We have been monitoring parental engagement on our learning application – Seesaw. As I’m sure you all know you, as a parent/carer, play a vital role in your child’s education therefore it’s important that we have an effective method of communicating with you.

I’m sure you’ll agree that Seesaw gives you a great insight as to what is happening for your child(ren) in school and, given the current Covid-19 restrictions, has allowed us to maintain an effective two-way communication with you.

Staff find sharing your child(ren)’s learning journey with you a very valuable process as they know your support is essential to your child(ren) achieving their full potential. We know that homes are very busy places but it’d be very much appreciated by staff, and your child(ren), if you were able to acknowledge your child(ren)’s work by liking or commenting on the post staff have shared.

From personal experience, the children are always very keen to see what has been shared with home and have always been particularly overjoyed when a comment has been left or a ‘like’ is visible. We know this won’t be possible for every single post but if there’s anything stand-out – please do let us know and we can share this with your child or even add it to the ‘Work to be Proud of’ section of their profile.

Many thanks for your co-operation,

Mrs Dunnett

P.A.N.T.S

P345 have been learning about their bodies and how to keep themselves safe.

Last week they used the NSPCC Let’s Talk Pants material, you might have heard of it, the children learned that:

P is for privates are private.

A is for always remember your body belongs to you.

N is for no.

T is for talk about secrets that upset you.

S is for speak up, someone can help.

You can find out more about this on the NSPCC site where there is more information for parents and carers. The subject matter is very serious, but the approach we are taking is appropriate for children. Visit the site and learn the song, so that you can sing-along with your child! It’s very catchy and we had lots of fun in class humming along. The message conveyed is very important. https://www.nspcc.org.uk/preventing-abuse/keeping-children-safe/underwear-rule/ The learning this term is important in helping children understand that all abuse is wrong and that they should always talk to a trusted adult if they are ever worried. We watched a short film which is an animation of the book called ‘My body belongs to me’ by Jill Starishevsky. It tells the story of a boy who experiences a touch from an adult he does not want and tells his parents: https://youtu.be/a-5mdt9YN6I

After such a serious discussion – we had some fun decorating a pair of pants! The children were challenged to make them as outrageous as they’d like.

Junior Sports Leaders

Jake our Active Schools Coordinator is back with us this term to deliver the Junior Sports Leader Award with P6 & 7.

Last week he taught the P6 and P7s about the importance of Space for leading games and activities. He tested this theory out by playing a couple of games and changing the ‘pitch’ size as we went. He then introduced the acronym EDIP for teaching new skills to a group. Explain, Demonstrate, Imitate and Practice (give comments and feedback). He taught them some fancy skills with the football and they had a good attempt at trying to learn them with this method.

They then had to use EDIP to come up with our their own skills and teach them to the class.

The Junior Sports Leader Award covers many of our Milton Magnificent 7 Skills which is a great way to reinforce them and show the children how skills are transferred and needed in other activities, areas and experiences and enhancing their skills for learning, life and work.😊

Internet Legends

Primary 567 refreshed and developed their Internet safety knowledge today with the help of Google and their Interland Packages. The children worked together to complete a quiz about being safe online and for every question they got correct they were provided with the steps to put together our their own little internet safety mascot.

They are now, officially, according to Google, Internet Legends. They were pros at the quiz questions on Internet Safety and managed to successfully build their little mascots.

Once they were built, they then had a play on Google’s Interland Game which gets the pupils to go to different islands and learn about Internet Safety to continue through the adventure. It is very clever indeed. It has been such a lovely way to work on a very serious topic!

Absence

Here at Milton Primary School, we are all committed to a positive policy of encouraging pupils to attend school regularly and on time. This is critical to pupil progress and there are strong links between attendance and performance results. Children frequently get colds, stomach upsets, etc. and some time off due to illness is to be expected.

If your child is unwell, it is necessary for you to phone on the first day. If they are off on Day 1 and still off on Day 4, we need you to re phone with an update.

In Highland, we have a 3-day policy, if there have been 3 days in a row where we have not heard from you we have to get in touch, regardless if we know they have been off ill at the start of the week.

We appreciate the efforts you go to keep in touch, especially messaging in Seesaw – we sometimes don’t pick these up before 9am so if all absence related messages could be either phoned in or emailed to gemma.dunnett@highland.gov.uk or lisa.nimmons@highland.gov.uk

A reminder that there is a Bank Holiday on Monday 3rd May therefore there will be no School. On Thursday 6th May school will also be closed for In-Service training.

Thank you for cooperation
Mrs Dunnett
