Den Building

Primary 3/4/5 have been working super hard on their whole class reward system since before Christmas. It entailed the children completing 16 tasks, such as lining up quietly, everyone on task and everyone in uniform, to eventually reveal a mystery treat underneath.

Their reward this term was outdoor den building and a snack! If you ever need a den built, P3/4/5 are the people to ask, check out their amazing creativity in the pictures below.

A well deserved treat but also a super opportunity to develop creativity and cooperation skills.

Orienteering and Running with Jake

The whole school were absolutely delighted to welcome back our Active Schools Coordinator, Jake to deliver activities to each of our 3 classes on Monday.

He played a variety of games with us all (including the teachers) and introduced us into some orienteering type activities. He explained that orienteering is a combination between fitness and skill as it is a timed race but you have to be careful to complete the activities properly, searching for information from around the track. Our teamwork skills were put to the test through the session. It was great to try out the different activities and have fun whilst being active in the outdoors – something we are all grateful to have access to just now I am sure!

Huge thank you to Jake, it was great to have him back!

We’re Back Together

This week saw the return of our P4-7 children and it has been FANTASTIC to have all our pupils in school, where we feel they belong.

The children have done really well – let’s hope we don’t have to do online learning ever again.

Here are some of the activities they have been learning/getting up to this week…

P567 looked at a little bit or grammar and used some verbs and adverbs in a funky way. We read the book called ‘Z got Zapped’ which goes through each letter of the alphabet with a sentence and a picture about something that is happening to that letter. We then got given a random letter and had to create our own. Can’t wait to put these all on the wall to create an adverb word bank for us to refer back to!

Finishing shape learning from before christmas today by looking at the nets of 3D figures. We had to create a 3D figure and then unfold it to see the net before drawing it out. We were looking for patterns with pyramid shapes and prisms. 3D nets can be quite tricky but using the magnetic and click together shapes were a great help 😊

P345 were given a staff member name and had to draw/paint them! Can you guess who?

Miss Hunter and Mrs Christie made some changes in P345. They spoke spoke to the children last week and asked them what they’d like to see in our classroom when they return. The most popular answers were a shop corner, jigsaws, Lego, crafts, more outdoor time and dragons! So…they said and we did! It’s not perfect yet but it will evolve as we speak to the children over the next wee while. We also changed our seating and the classroom feels much more spacious.
Enjoying the loose parts area this week in the playground.

P123 have some new resources for enhancing their experiences in play…

Team work to complete a tricky puzzle.

Nursery News

It has been lovely to see the Nursery children throw themselves into a new learning focus this week. They are exploring Spring and have been observing the different signs in their garden and the Woods.

Today they got busy planting their own seeds as part of their exploration of living things and how they grow and develop. The children planted sweet peas today and were able to talk about what they’ll need to grow. An exciting time ahead watching their flowers appear (hopefully) over the next few weeks.

Mrs MacDonald brought in some beautiful stones she made for the children to explore. Look how busy the children were today – sorting them and using them to support their counting. Mrs Christie, Mrs Dunnett and Mrs June have already placed their orders for some to take home for their gardens.

The Nursery teachers have also been discussing choices and the opportunities the children have to make choices in their learning. This week the children were encouraged to choose where to have their snack. Look at all of the lovely places to eat in our outdoor area. Sailing away on a boat with a snack bowl looks just perfect.

World Book Day 2021

A little Lockdown didn’t stop the staff and children at Milton Primary celebrating World Book Day. The children (and staff) were invited to dress as their favourite book character and enjoyed a day taking part in activities to encourage a celebration of reading.

Primary 1/2/3 enjoyed some time outdoors in a story circle.

Primary 3/4/5 were tasked with a creativity challenge – turning a potato into a book character. They come complete with labels but I bet you guessed who lots of them were before seeing the label.

The staff got into the Book Day spirit too. Unfortunately we missed the opportunity to photograph some of the fantastic costumes.

It was lovely to see the children at home get involved too. A huge thank you to everyone for sending in some photographs of what they got up to.

A Disappointing but Productive Afternoon

Yesterday afternoon the girls in P3/4/5, Mrs Christie and Mrs MacDonald took a walk down the Woods as it was such a lovely afternoon. We were saddened to see a LOT of rubbish had been left at the area we play in, we suspect, following the sledging fun which has occurred in the last fortnight.

Today we returned to the woods equipped with litter pickers and bin bags to clear as much as we could in the short time we had. Miss Crew and Mrs Sutherland were also recruited. We couldn’t believe what we collected! Items included: lots of plastic bottles (which could’ve been safely recycled), bags of suspected dog’s mess, a hoover, several broken sledges, two bike wheels, a scooter, glass bottles – the list could go on.

The girls did a tremendous job this afternoon and were very proud of themselves for making such a positive contribution to the Milton community. Thank you girls!

Busy Bees in Primary 3/4/5

I have been holding on to these photographs for far too long. I love seeing what the children are getting up to at home but I’m aware they might be eager to see what everyone is getting upto at school since we can’t all be together right now so I thought I’d share some examples of their work here too!

They’ve been working very hard on their story problems to prepare for our numeracy meets with Ms Brewer. This week’s division problems were very tricky but we do love a challenge.

The children have also been working very hard on our class novel “Fantastic Mr Fox”. They completed this visualisation task which involved reading Roald Dahl’s description very carefully and drawing the picture they saw in their heads. I think they look fantastic!

I look forward to sharing some more examples of the fantastic work we have received from the children over the next few weeks. I am so proud of them all for rising to the challenge this lockdown has brought.

Thank You Action for Children

The Nursery children were delighted to receive this amazing donation from Action for Children. A box fully kitted out with the ingredients to make their own pizza at home. Look how happy they all are!

We were delighted to receive some photographs of the children using their kits at home.

I do believe there were some very grateful staff too who received a special gift to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Thank you to Action for Children for sharing the love with our Nursery children & Staff. We are so lucky to have such a supportive community in Milton.
