Outdoor Maths

In P5/6/7 we had a visit from Fionnadh Carroll who works in the Newton Room in Dingwall – part of the science skills academy. She specialises in STEM activities (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). She delivered a box of maths goodies for us to keep in school along with some wonderful ideas for how to use them in the outdoors!

On Tuesday we kicked off with a warm up game called find my factor where we had to run into groups of the same number as the answer to the question. We then moved onto drawing shapes with chalk and finding the perimeter of them. This was a lovely activity that helped act as a revision of our previous maths topic involving perimeter.

The children thoroughly enjoyed getting the chance to use the tape measures and explore perimeter physically on a bigger scale than we can in the classroom. We are all excited to get stuck into the box for future lessons throughout the year!

Milton Fundraising

Hello Everyone,

Milton Primary have signed up to take part in Cash For Kids School’s Challenge. This is a fundraising competition to help raise money for a project within the school. We are competing against 8 other schools and the school who raises the most money will receive a £3000 bonus. 2nd place will get £2000 and 3rd place will get £1000.

At Milton we have decided that this project is Improving Our School Library. We came to this decision as many of the children have commented that our current library is looking a little tired. Many of the books are quite old and therefore not very appealing to the children. We have consulted with the children to discuss what they would like to see in their library. Some of their ideas include: new books based on their interests, comfy seats to sit on and read, new rugs to make the area more cosy and new shelving to display the books we have in a better way.

We have until the 8th October at 12 noon to raise as much money as possible. Any help you can give us would be greatly appreciated. If you have any fundraising ideas that we could all get involved with please let us know!

If you are able to make a donation please visit

https://www.cashforkidsgive.co.uk/campaign/mfr-charity-schools-challenge-2020/fundraisers/milton-primary-school/

or if you’d prefer to make a donation in person please put it in an envelope with your name and amount and leave it with Mrs Nimmons in the school office.

Please feel free to share the link on social media and with your friends and family.

Thank you

Numeracy

We have been delighted to welcome Ms Brewer back to Milton this week. As many of you know, Ms Brewer is currently working very hard on developing the Numeracy curriculum for the Highland Council and we are so lucky to have her with us.

This week she has been working with all classes introducing a new approach to teaching Numeracy through the use of story problems. By using different number ranges across the class, the children have been appropriately challenged. Ms Brewer has worked alongside the class teachers to explore the various strategies the children are using to work out the answer to a range of questions whilst modelling their strategies to the rest of the class. This enables children to be exposed to various strategies and evaluate how effective they are for particular calculations. This has been very interesting for Class Teachers to observe how the children are applying their strategy and knowledge to solve problems. Keep an eye on See-Saw for further updates.

Caution – builders working!

Mrs June and Mrs Forth have been very busy creating a new area for the children and we are delighted to share that it is now open for use.

The children were absolutely delighted to play in our new Construction Area – their wee faces made it all worthwhile. They were VERY busy building and working so hard and the communication we were observing between them was just amazing.

P3/4/5 Woods Visit

Good Morning

We will be visiting the woods today. Please ensure your child has appropriate clothing and footwear- hopefully it stays dry for us.

Please don’t feel your child needs to be in full uniform today, it’s important they are able to enjoy the experience without worrying about getting their uniform dirty.

See you soon

Mrs Christie
