Outdoor Maths

In P5/6/7 we had a visit from Fionnadh Carroll who works in the Newton Room in Dingwall – part of the science skills academy. She specialises in STEM activities (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). She delivered a box of maths goodies for us to keep in school along with some wonderful ideas for how to use them in the outdoors!

On Tuesday we kicked off with a warm up game called find my factor where we had to run into groups of the same number as the answer to the question. We then moved onto drawing shapes with chalk and finding the perimeter of them. This was a lovely activity that helped act as a revision of our previous maths topic involving perimeter.

The children thoroughly enjoyed getting the chance to use the tape measures and explore perimeter physically on a bigger scale than we can in the classroom. We are all excited to get stuck into the box for future lessons throughout the year!
