Success!

Well done to P3/4 who raised £38.95 selling their delicious treats to the parents who came along to the P1/2 Fairtrade Assembly. Their class enterprise is off to a super start.

We all enjoyed the P1/2 assembly on Friday 18th March. Very well done to Miss Spicer and all the boys and girls. We thought your singing was excellent and we were all very impressed with your loud, clear voices. Thank you for sharing so many interesting facts about Fairtrade.

Have you heard?

So have you heard our news? On Friday we got a phone call from Ross County to say we had won the poster competition .

There was so many excellent entries – they received hundreds from all over the Highlands. We couldn’t believe it when we heard that our Staggie poster which Amy and Nadine painted (after a little help from our friends) took first place.

The poster will be professionally printed and displayed around the park and players dressing room in the run up to the final.

We are waiting to hear from Ross County – there will be a cheque presentation for the school for £500 and everyone (children and parents) will receive tickets to a home game. Whole school trip here we come! We  have also been told that buses will be provided from Milton to the game through in Dingwall.

More info to follow!

Milton Primary School to grow seeds from space!

Milton Primary School to grow seeds from space!

Pupils at Milton Primary School are preparing to become space biologists and embark on a voyage of discovery by growing seeds that have been into space.

In September, 2kg of rocket seeds were flown to the International Space Station (ISS) on Soyuz 44S where they will spend several months in microgravity before returning to Earth in March 2016. The seeds have been sent as part of Rocket Science, an educational project launched by the RHS Campaign for School Gardening and the UK Space Agency.

Milton Primary School will be one of up to 10,000 schools to receive a packet of 100 seeds from space, which they will grow alongside seeds that haven’t been to space and measure the differences over seven weeks. The pupils won’t know which seed packet contains which seeds until all results have been collected by the RHS Campaign for School Gardening and analysed by professional biostatisticians.

The out-of-this-world, nationwide science experiment will enable the pupils to think more about how we could preserve human life on another planet in the future, what astronauts need to survive long-term missions in space and the difficulties surrounding growing fresh food in challenging climates.
Isobel Sinclair, Head Teacher says: “We are very excited to be taking part in Rocket Science. This experiment is a fantastic way of teaching our pupils to think more scientifically and share their findings with the whole community.

Rocket Science is just one educational project from a programme developed by the UK Space Agency to celebrate British ESA astronaut Tim Peake’s Principia mission to the ISS and inspire young people to look into careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) subjects, including horticulture.

Applications to take part in Rocket Science are still open and will close in March next year or until all packs have been allocated. Schools and educational groups can apply at rhs.org.uk/schoolgardening.
